About our Carbon Offset Options

Carbon Offsets are a tool to slow climate change by reducing avoidable carbon emissions to ‘offset’ those that are unavoidable.

Ideally, for every tonne of carbon dioxide that we emit in one place we reduce an emission elsewhere by a tonne (carbon neutral) or more (carbon positive).

The currency of this scheme is the Carbon Credit, which places a $ value on each tonne of carbon dioxide emitted or avoided.

Companies and bodies develop a range of certified schemes to generate Carbon Credits. Here are some examples;

  • Reducing electricity consumption by replacing incandescent lights with fluorescents
  • Generating power (electricity and heat) from the sun with SOLAR installations
  • Preventing the emission of methane and other harmful greenhouse gases
  • Producing power with wind turbines and replacing dirty fossil fuel powered stations
  • Planting trees. Trees absorb CO2 from the air
  • Reducing the use of firewood for cooking in developing countries through use of Solar Cookers and fuel efficient stoves

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages.

Solar power for example is generates clean energy but the technology is still expensive, which makes the solar carbon credits dearer than others.

Waste Recycling credits on the other hand are cheaper, and while the impact on greenhouse gas emissions is not as effective as solar, the waste recycling credit is an important step toward the long-term sustainability of our communities.

The choice is yours – you can even choose to offset your emissions household waste with the waste recycling credits, your household energy consumption with solar and your travel emissions with forest conservation credits to grow the Australian wildlife corridor.

Climate Wise carbon credits are Australian made. Your offsets support sustainability, technological progress and nature conservation in your own community. Unlike schemes abroad, your Climate Wise offset supports the Australian economy and creates local employment in the sector that will secure the future of our planet.

Solar

Our solar power offsets are sourced from a scheme regulated by the federal government, in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC's).

Our solar power offsets support solar hot water and solar power installation for Australian homes and businesses. They are sourced from the federal government mandatory renewable energy target (MRET) in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

Those privately installed devices are used to generate electricity or reduce energy consumption and as such replace grid-power derived from traditional less environmentally friendly sources.

By supporting the use of solar power in Australia you are creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for our country.

  • Our solar power offsets are sourced from the federal government's mandatory renewable energy target (MRET) scheme in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates, implemented through the Energy (Electricity) Act 2000.
  • Those certificated are registered in an electronic form http://www.orer.gov.au/recs/index.html.
  • RECs are created by registered persons or entities, validated by the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator, traded between registered persons, and eventually surrendered to demonstrate liability compliance against the requirements of the Australian Government's mandatory renewable energy target.
  • Each REC has a unique code which is supplied to you by us once you make a purchase. On your behalf we are acquiring the amount of RECs required to offset your carbon offset.
  • All REC's are stored in a government registry.

Solar REC's are the most effecient, premium offset option available in Australia and priced at $39 per tonne inlcuding GST.

Waste Recycling

Our waste recycling offset is sourced from the Australian Greenhouse Friendly (GF) Scheme, which is administered by the federal government's Greenhouse Office. http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/greenhousefriendly/

The project reduces waste heading to domestic landfill sites. Landfill sites produce methane as the organic matter decomposes. Methane is 21 times more powerful a greenhouse gas than CO2. One tonne of methane is equal to 21-23 tonnes of CO2, and waste recycling credits help reduce the amount of methane in the atmosphere.

Waste recycling can generate:

  • A massive 85% reduction in the amount of domestic waste sent to landfill.
  • A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that exceeds national targets.
  • Improved soil, air and water quality.
  • Reduced water consumption through the ready supply of high quality composts and soil conditioners.
  • Substantial increases in recovered resources available for re-use.
  • Lower cost of waste disposal in the long term.

Your wate recycling offsets will help fund the development and running of effecient recycling plants in local communities across Australia.

More information about this project can be found here http://www.smrc.com.au/projects/rrrc/rrrc-cycle.cfm.

Landfill Greenhouse Friendly offsets are offered at $19 per tonne including GST.
